One of the things I enjoy about being a group therapist is bringing together people of varying backgrounds who on the surface have different problems to deal with but who discover through the process of opening up and letting down their social masks that they have similar thoughts and feelings as others. It is an opportunity for people to experience their common humanity and transcend the emotional isolation that keeps them feeling different and not as good as others. It is immensely rewarding for me to help individuals work through conflict with other group members which is usually fuelled by some type of fear that is unconscious.
